Community Cast Video Day 43

Today’s video looks at some of my favorite hair things.

A couple notes: In the video, I stumble over the words sutler and merchant. Sutlers are a very specific entity. The vast majority of people selling at events are merchants, not sutlers. A sutler is a portral, an interpretation rather than just a seller. There are some well done sutler impressions from what I understand. I do not have experience with them because they are a military entity, not a civilian one. My semi-sarcastic use of the word sutler was ill mannered.

Since I talked about trying to recreate the hair combs with the jet glass, I should have mentioned I wear reproductions to events, not originals, and why. It is as simple as originals get lost and originals get damaged. Years, many years, ago, I had a custom piece made by a nice, local jeweler who specializes in estate jewelry. It was lovely. It cost a week’s sallary. I was so excited to wear it. I lost it the first day I wore it. I have not worn an expensive or original piece to an event since.

Community Cast Video Day 40

Today’s video is coming a bit later in the day. I woke up this morning and just said “no” when I saw the snow. Luckily, lovely pretties in the mail cheered me.

Here is Clara loving the packing paper.

My pretty doll goodies came from Repro Dolls. Find her shop here.

My Patriotic doll has her chemise. I am considering naming her Liberty.

Add: Now she has a petticoat as well…

Community Cast Video Day 39

In today’s video, we make a simple pincushion.

Btw, Clara already stole both samples. This says these would make excellent cat toys. Consider filling the core with catnip by sprinkling along the roll.

Materials:

  • Wool flannel or batting scraps
  • Ribbon or silk scraps

Here are my two samples. I like how the ribbon version turned out. I am not satisfied with the fabric one. It may please me better with decorative stitches.

This shows how to use fabric instead of ribbon. I finger pressed the silk. It would have been better if I took the time to get out the iron. This was also a heavier taffeta.

Infringement and Ethics

Today was supposed to be productively focused on a pretty white bonnet, a PowerPoint for next weekend, a new publication, and a really cool collaborative announcement.

Instead, I find I must address something that has been bothering me for a while:

Infringing on Intellectual Property Rights

It is entirly possible the listing I saw today was a one-time mistake from someone who doesn’t know. But the reality is unethical use of other’s work has been a problem for years.

Selling items made from someone’s pattern or directions, whether sold or free, is not ethical.

Selling items made from what one learns in a of one learns in a workshop or class is not ethical.

Taking someone’s research and republishing without credit is not ethical.
From a legal perspective:

Each of my e-publications in my Etsy shop are protected by copyright. Fanciful Utility is protected by copyright. All of my books are registered with the Library of Congress. A copyright statement accompanies each of my project templates and directions on my blogs.

I hate that I find I need to address this at a time like this, but here it is. Please, do your part in understanding Intellectual Property Rights, Copyright, and the ethical use of others work. Help those new to this field or hobby understand them as well.
