For the First homemade gift of Christmas we have a heart shaped pincushion which will also make an adorable ornament.
From Eliza Leslie’s American Girl’s Book, this heart pincushion is made from two pieces of triangular fabric, ribbon and batting for the inside.
- Use 12 day Christmas Heart Ornamentwith the longest side twice the length of the two legs.
- Sew right sides together along all three sides leaving enough space to turn the triangle right side out.
- Stuff with batting or emery and sew closed
- Gather along the longest side
- Pull tight forming a heart, securing the points together
- Add a ribbon to hang the heart from or a bow and hanging loop

Anna –
Nice simple pattern – my favorite kind! What kind of batting do you use? Flat quilt batting or the fiber fill stuff that is used to stuff toys and such?
Thank you!
Great question! For these, I use a loose batting, either cotton pulled apart or a packaged fill. To use this pattern for a pincushion, go for a wool batting, bran or emery. This will be better for your pins and needles.
On a side note – For modern projects, like by birthday bears, I really like the non-clumping fill. It is a synthetic fiber with a twist to it. It fills fully and evenly. For the little bears, the arms and legs are nicely firm. For the larger bears, they hold up nicely to getting squished during a well cuddled night’s sleep.

Oh goodie! I have lots of the loose stuff. I bought some when it was on sale to fill my sock monkeys and rag dolls. Sock monkeys in particular take a lot!
One more question – you say to gather the long edge. Do you mean use a gathering stitch, or just by puting the 2 points together you gather them and make the little hole in the center?
I want to make some of these with the red and white scraps I have around!
Thanks,
Eileen
Another good question – Gather along the long edge, where the seam is. When you pull tight, you will get the little hole as the heart shapes.
